Actor Carl Weathers dies at home aged 76

Actor Carl Weathers, best known for his portrayal of Apollo Creed in Rocky films, has died at home aged 76, his family confirm. The star, who was formerly an NFL linebacker "died peacefully in his sleep".

In a statement, his family said: "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers.

"He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognised worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend."

Weathers became a loved comedy and action actor and featured in the Rocky franchise, as Predator opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Happy Gilmour opposite Adam Sandler.

Most recently he starred in the Disney+ hit "The Mandalorian", and appeared as himself in a recurring cameo role in Arrested Development.
