Newhaven Port

Police have confirmed that six people have been taken to hospital after a number of migrants were found in the back of a lorry on a ferry in Newhaven, East Sussex. No fatalities have been reported at this stage.

Border force and police are in attendance, while pictures have shown several ambulances also being on scene. Lewes MP, Maria Caulfield, has an office opposite the port. She's said she's "concerned" about the reports.

On X, she said: "Devastating news for us here in Newhaven. My office faces the ferry and the port and there has been activity all morning. Huge thanks to border force, the port officials and emergency services. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected".

Speaking to the BBC, she continued: "The ferry's still there, normally the ferry would have left by now so it's been quite obvious for most of the morning that there's been a problem at the port."

Witnesses have reported seeing people being taken from the back or a freezer lorry and being treated by paramedics. It was earlier feared that some had died as members of the public thought they saw body bags being taken onto the ferry, however local media have said all are believed to be alive - although this has yet to be confirmed.

The lorry arrived at Newhaven port on a passenger ferry from Dieppe in northern France this morning. It's still being examined on board the ship. Authorities were alerted before the ship arrived at Newhaven and emergency services were waiting on the dockside.
